A Legacy of Positive Practices

The Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis (IABA) was co-founded in 1981 by Dr. Gary W. LaVigna and Dr. Thomas J. Willis with a passion for helping individuals with autism and IDD improve their quality of life using a humanistic, integrated, whole-person centered approach using positive behavioral strategies. Their framework, Multi-Element Behavior Supports (MEBSâ„¢), focuses on creating positive environments, skill development, motivation, and non-aversive interventions to ensure safety and well-being for individuals and their communities.

MEBS focuses not primarily on eliminating challenging behaviors but on understanding the individual and improving their quality of life by achieving five valued outcomes: community presence and participation, autonomy and self-determination, continuous involvement and development, increasing independence and productivity, and developing social relationships and friendships.
